The Chicago Department of Transportation (CDOT) in partnership with the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) is in the midst of an important program to reconstruct 30 viaduct structures along the Dan Ryan and Kennedy Expressways. All of the viaducts were constructed over 40 years ago and are in poor condition.

IEI was recently selected by CDOT to provide resident engineering and inspection services for the 71st Street Viaduct over the Dan Ryan Expressway. This award is IEI’s first opportunity to provide construction services to CDOT as a prime consultant.

However, the firm is no stranger to the Expressway Viaduct Reconstruction Program. IEI is working closely with TranSystems Corporation to provide program management services for the three year project. Also, last year IEI construction inspectors worked on the 83 rd Street Viaduct over the Dan Ryan and on the Ainslie Street Viaduct over the Kennedy Expressway.

CDOT Project Manager John Yonan, PE described the 83 rd Street structure as one of the most deteriorated viaducts in the program with exposed steel plates and failing concrete. The new $4.2 million replacement structure opened to traffic in October 2002.
