CTA Construction Management Services
IEI provided construction inspection and safety management personnel to Arcadis for various Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) construction projects on a Task Order basis. Below is a summary of task orders to date.
Task 1: Wilson Redline Station Reconstruction:
The $203 million Wilson Station Reconstruction Project is one of the largest CTA ‘L’ station projects in the agency’s history. The project replaced the badly deteriorated facility that was built in 1923 with a completely rebuilt, modern and ADA accessible station that will serve as a new transfer point between Red and Purple Line Express train service. The new stationhouse features two elevators for vertical access to the platforms; ramps; wheelchair access at the fare gates; Braille signage and two of the three new station entrances and exits will be accessible. The project also includes significant track and structural work that allows for easy and convenient transfers between the Red Line and Purple Line Express; enhance the street-level environment on Broadway and improve CTA operations. As part of the Arcadis construction management team, IEI provided safety management and senior structural inspection for this important project.
Task 2: 103rd Street Bus Garage:
The CTA’s bus garage at 103rd Street underwent several mechanical improvements including replacing the existing boilers and air handling units. As part of the Arcadis construction management team, IEI provided cost estimating services and senior mechanical inspection support for this project.
Task 3: Tunnel Communications Upgrade:
The CTA has advanced a plan to improve wireless communications in its subways and underground facilities, and upgrade wireless service in the tunnels to 4G. The upgraded wireless network provides continuous, reliable mobile phone service underground in all subway platforms, mezzanines and tunnels, and offer better and more robust voice and high-speed data services. It also improves safety by providing more reliable communication between CTA personnel and emergency responders. The network replaced the existing infrastructure that dates back to 2005, which is inadequate to support modern wireless data needs. This 12-month project replaced the wireless network in the CTA’s 11.4 miles of underground subway, or about 22 miles of individual tunnels, on the Blue and Red lines. IEI is providing safety management as part of the Arcadis team.
