I-55 from I-80 to US 52 Diverging Diamonds

I-55 from I-80 to US 52 Diverging Diamonds

Due to a proposed private development on the northeast side of I-55 and IL 59, daily traffic was expected to increase significantly. The purpose of the project was to provide IDOT users with a safer, more convenient, and overall improved driving experience while extending the service life of the existing roadway and bridges. IEI delivered Phase III Construction Management services for this project.

IEI provided engineering services required for the construction inspection and supervision of the contractor’s work for two projects: 62H15 and 62H16.

Project 62H15 included the reconstruction of the I-55/IL 59 interchange from I-80 to US 52 in Joliet and Shorewood. Improvements included the addition of auxiliary lanes on I-55, intersection upgrades, new traffic signals, retaining and noise abatement walls, drainage improvements, a shared-use path, roadway lighting, ITS, and aesthetic landscaping.

Under Project 62H16, the existing bridge center median on US 52 over I-55 was removed to accommodate side-by-side left-turn lanes. The work included removal of the concrete median, traffic signal modifications, bridge deck repairs, ¾-inch deck scarification with a 2¼-inch latex concrete overlay, minor roadway profile improvements, expansion joint replacement, and structural repairs.

This reconstruction project involved heavy earthwork and a diverging diamond interchange.
