MTA LIRR Expansion Project – Floral Park to Hicksville
The Long Island Rail Road’s Main Line carries more than 300,000 passengers daily and desperately needed the relief of a third track. This expansion project creates a new 9.8-mile third track from Floral Park to Hicksville, the top two busiest commuter rail lines in North America. This $5B project encompasses the expansion of eight existing LIRR bridges over local streets, the improvement of six LIRR stations, and the elimination of seven street-level grade crossings. The passengers and the surrounding communities will be benefited by the safety and infrastructure upgrades to the signal, power, and communication systems.
IEI’s technical staff put their wide-range of expertise to work to create the final designs and the designs during construction of various underpasses and roadways along the 10-mile corridor – Willis Avenue, School Street, Main Street, Railroad Avenue, and the Mineola Crew Facility. IEI’s contribution to this successful project included roadway geometric design, grading, drainage, crossing design, and 3D modeling.
