Michigan Street Complete Street, Phases I-II

This stretch of Michigan Street in Indianapolis is just under one mile and was designed to reduce the travel lanes between Holmes Avenue and White River Pkwy W Drive from six lanes to two lanes (one in each direction) with added parking and a cycle track. Utilizing Complete Streets principles, the project improves mobility for all users with the addition of tabled crosswalks, shortened intersections, traffic signal modifications, ADA improvements, and a separated off-street bike path on the south side of the road.

This stretch of Michigan Street is located between the existing B&O Trail to the west and an existing cycle track on the Indiana University/Purdue University Indianapolis campus to the east, so the new configuration provides connectivity to these adjacent areas.

As Prime Design Consultant, IEI was responsible for roadway and drainage design, utility coordination services, and overall project management. This reconfiguration required the design of new curbs, sidewalks and curb ramps throughout the project limits, as well as curb bump outs and tabled crosswalks that promote safer pedestrian crossings and maximize the safety of bicyclists utilizing the cycle track.

This project was guided by the vision of the River West Strategic Plan, which had an overall goal to improve public infrastructure and revitalize Indianapolis, while maintaining stakeholder input, providing sufficient bicycle facilities and increasing connectivity.
