South Michigan Avenue Corridor Improvements

South Michigan Avenue Corridor Improvements

The South Michigan Corridor in Chicago’s Roseland community is one of ten communities in the City that are prioritized for commercial corridor improvements through the City’s INVEST S/W (ISW) initiative. The initiative aims to provide safe, walkable, and attractive streets that will foster community and economic growth. As well, the initiative supports the activation of neighborhood cores that have historically served as focal points for pedestrian activity, shopping, services, transportation, public spaces, and community amenities.

As the Prime consultant for the corridor improvements, IEI is leading a multi-disciplinary team of design professionals through the development of construction documents for the project, scheduled to be completed in 2027. This includes an extensive community engagement process through the development of construction documents to be bid. The corridor improvements project is a comprehensive placemaking and urban design project which is coordinated with the Chicago Transit Authority’s proposed Red Line Extension.

Overall, the project includes widened sidewalks, traffic calming, and placemaking improvements intended to create a commercial destination with an emphasis on the pedestrian experience and is unified with modern materials, branding, and safety improvements.
