Pennsy Trail Phase 3A Improvements

Pennsy Trail Phase 3A Improvements

As part of the Indy Greenways Master Plan, the City of Indianapolis proposed extending the Pennsy Trail along the former Penn Central Railroad Corridor between Shortridge Road and Post Road, south of Washington Street on the east side of Indianapolis. As the prime consultant, IEI provided design services for this new 1.6-mile, 10-foot-wide multi-use trail.

Utilizing the old railroad corridor, the Pennsy Trail ultimately connects the Irvington Neighborhood to the Town of Cumberland in Hancock County. Pennsy Trail spans 7.2 miles in total and is a crucial component to the city’s pedestrian system for the east side of Indianapolis.

The project scope included an assessment of the existing corridor and features, trail design, lighting design for the tunnel under I-465, utility coordination, pertinent permitting, and contract document preparation in accordance with the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) Local Public Agency (LPA) process.
