IEI announces Ken Smorynski’s advancement to Regional Leadership
Infrastructure Engineering Inc. (IEI) is pleased to announce the appointment of Vice President, Ken Smorynski, PE, SE to Vice President, Illinois. This consolidation of IEI’s well-regarded Chicago and Peoria, Illinois offices under a single leadership will sharpen IEI’s focus on strategic statewide growth.
Mr. Smorynski will oversee IEI’s design, program management and construction inspection staff for the entire state. He will also be responsible for staff development and engagement, client relations, contract management and overseeing day-to-day activities.

On August 26th, Mr. Kashif Khan, PE assumed the role of President of IEI, succeeding Mr. Michael Sutton, PE, who served as President and CEO since purchasing the company in 1997. Mr. Sutton will remain Chief Executive Officer.
Infrastructure Engineering Inc. Promotes Aaron Patterson to Chicago Office Design Group Manager
Chicago, IL (September 14, 2021) — Infrastructure Engineering Inc. (IEI) is pleased to announce that Aaron Patterson, PE, PTOE has been promoted to Design Group Manager to lead the efforts of the design team at the firm’s corporate headquarters in Chicago, Illinois.
Mr. Patterson will now be responsible for managing Chicago’s design team while overseeing the design and coordination of several projects. He will mentor the next generation of IEI engineers and share knowledge of industry standards and best practices.
With more than 14 years of design and transportation experience, Mr. Patterson will focus on continuing to develop the firm’s design capabilities to deliver successful solutions for our clients’ most challenging projects. He and his team will oversee key client relationships, proposal development, and project execution.
Mr. Patterson originally joined IEI in 2012 as a project engineer and his tenure has included several complex projects, most recently serving as the CDOT Aldermanic Menu Program Manager since 2019. His broad experience includes design, project management, coordination, and quality assurances for all phases of project development – particularly for highway, local roadway, pedestrian facilities, traffic, and bridge design.
Aaron Patterson studied applied physics at Morehouse College, civil engineering at Columbia University and earned his MBA at the University of Chicago Booth School of Business. He is a licensed Professional Engineer in Illinois and New York and certified Professional Traffic Operations Engineer (PTOE).

Leadership Transitions: IEI Announces Appointment of Kashif Khan as President of the Firm
Infrastructure Engineering Inc. (IEI) today announces a series of leadership transitions effective immediately.
Kashif Khan, PE, the company’s current Executive Vice President, will become President of IEI, succeeding Michael Sutton, PE, who has served as President and Chief Executive Officer since purchasing the company in 1997. Mr. Sutton will retain the position of Chief Executive Officer.

Since joining IEI in 2006, Mr. Khan, PE has held key leadership roles, with project delivery, sales and business operations. He was instrumental in the launch of IEI’s Indianapolis office and helped transform the location into a focused and profitable cost center. In 2011, Mr. Khan became a shareholder and a principal of the firm. As Executive Vice President, he oversaw the firm’s project delivery with a focus on improving operational efficiencies. As President, Mr. Khan has oversight of all key functional areas of the firm and will manage day to day operational matters. He is a strong believer in community service, which mirrors the IEI belief of giving back to the community in which we live and work. Mr. Khan received his Bachelor of Civil Engineering degree from City University of New York, Grove School of Engineering and earned his Master of Business Administration from the University of Indianapolis.

IEI Celebrates Women’s History Month
IEI celebrates National Women’s History month and the monumental impact that women have made throughout the globe in many fields, including science and engineering. In 1946, Hattie Scott Peterson was the first African American woman in the U.S. to earn a degree in civil engineering. She graduated from Howard University with a B.S. in Civil Engineering, started her career with the US Geological Survey and then succeeded on to become the first African American woman engineer in the US Army Corp of Engineers (USACE).

Infrastructure Engineering Names Ken Smorynski as Chicago Office Operations Leader
Infrastructure Engineering Inc. (IEI) is pleased to announce the promotion of Ken Smorynski, PE, SE to Vice President and the Chicago Office Operations Leader. In his new role, Mr. Smorynski will oversee IEI’s design, program management and construction inspection staff. He will also be responsible for staff development, lead generation, client relations, contract management and overseeing day-to-day activities.
For nearly eight years, Mr. Smorynski managed the Chicago Design team and under his leadership, the Design Group more than doubled its revenue and took on more complex projects, which has been an essential part of the office’s growth.
In addition to his role as Design Group Manager, Mr. Smorynski was also the Project Manager of the CDOT Jackson Park Mobility Improvements project that includes delivery of Phase I and Phase II engineering services to support the South Lakefront Framework Plan. This $145M project is designed to provide significant transportation improvements to increase safety, roadway mobility, and pedestrian accommodations in and around Jackson Park in preparation for the Obama Presidential Center. The project was very challenging in that it involved working on complex Phase I preliminary engineering and environmental assessment services concurrently with Phase II final design engineering services. The Phase I environmental assessment entailed two lead federal agencies, the National Park Service and the Federal Highway Administration; and sought to balance providing mobility improvements while at the same time avoiding or minimizing impacts to the various environmental and historic resources in the project area.
Ken embodies the core values IEI was built on and he has the respect of his colleagues and clients alike. “This promotion recognizes the contributions Ken has made during his tenure with IEI and I look forward to experiencing greater Chicago Office growth as Ken settles into his new role,” said IEI President, Michael Sutton.
An accomplished structural engineer, Mr. Smorynski holds a Bachelor and Master of Science in Civil Engineering; and recently earned a Master of Business Administration from the University of Illinois Champaign-Urbana. His expertise, skill and leadership will enhance business operations and expand IEI’s project footprint throughout Chicagoland.

Considering the firm’s commitment, Michael Sutton, IEI’s President and Northwestern University Alum, gave the first payment of a financial pledge to Northwestern University through IEI’s philanthropic arm – Infrastructure Engineering Foundation (IEF). The financial gift will help advance the school’s diversity, equity and inclusion efforts pertaining to black/African American students . IEI Joins OMWBD Panel Discussion
Infrastructure Engineering Inc. Executive Vice President, Kashif Khan, joined other industry leaders for the Office of Minority and Women Business Development’s (OMWBD Indianapolis) 13th Annual Year-End Forum. The virtual panel discussion addressed the unique impacts of the pandemic on XBE firms and what to expect in 2021. The forum included City Council President, Vop Osili, along with representatives from city agencies who spoke about the upcoming opportunities and expectations of the City from all stakeholders responsible for delivering services and goods to the City of Indianapolis. More than 100 people attended a day of information, inspiration, encouragement, and vision.
