IEI celebrates Black History Month

February 1, 2024

Since 1976, February has been designated as a national observance to create an opportunity for Americans of all races to learn more about Black history makers and the importance of African American culture to our society. Black History Month spotlights the legacy of Black America, reminding us of the past and opening our minds to all that is achievable in the future.

The theme of Black History Month 2024 is “African Americans and the Arts.” Tapping into a unique blend of African, Caribbean, and Black American experiences, African American artists have used all forms of cultural expression to preserve community memory and as a tool for empowerment, and their works have often resulted in setting global trends.

As an African-American majority owned firm, IEI is contributing to future Black History through our work and philanthropy in our communities. We’ve had the privilege to participate in historical changes to the cities we serve by working on projects like the Riverwalk and Maggie Daley Park in Chicago; New York’s Red Hook Integrated Flood Protection; the B&O multimodal trail in Indianapolis; and the Monroe Street redevelopment in Detroit’s Greektown Neighborhood.

History is made by the people who live it. IEI’s team is using their present to create a history that will be worth remembering.

IEI Celebrates Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s Legacy

January 12, 2024

Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day is particularly special this year because it falls on Dr. King’s actual birthday, January 15th. This national holiday celebrates the life and legacy of Dr. King who led a nonviolent civil rights movement in the mid-1900’s to gain legal equality for African Americans.

The theme established by The King Center for the 2024 King Holiday Observance is, “Shifting the Cultural Climate through the Study and Practice of Kingian Nonviolence.” Dr. King’s pioneering work demonstrated that nonviolence is the sustainable solution to injustice and violence in our world and ultimately leads to the creation of the Beloved Community, where injustice ceases, and love prevails.

Dr. King dedicated his life to speaking out against injustice, inequality, poverty, and war. As a majority African American-owned firm, IEI aims to honor Dr. King’s influential legacy by contributing to the creation of equity and equality for all people through the development of essential infrastructure in the communities where we work.

Because MLK Jr. dared to dream, we can now all be dreamers of a better world.

IEI signs the Equity in Infrastructure Project (EIP) Pledge

November 27, 2023

IEI’s CEO, Michael Sutton, PE joined leaders from agencies and firms at ENR’s LA Infrastructure Forum to sign the Equity in Infrastructure Project (EIP) pledge.

The EIP aims to create a more equitable distribution of the funds made available by the $1.2 Trillion Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act by creating more prime, JV, and equity contracting opportunities for historically underutilized businesses (HUBs), thereby contributing to the growth of generational wealth and the reduction of the racial wealth gap in our industry.

IEI recognizes the importance of contracting programs that help level the playing field for M/D/WBE firms by opening opportunities for smaller firms to demonstrate their capabilities and learn through partnering.

IEI appreciates and supports the vision of Denver International Airport CEO Phillip A. Washington, former US Deputy Secretary of Transportation John D. Porcari, and others who had the foresight to found EIP. We look forward to working with the leaders of the firms and agencies who also support and signed the EIP in advancing this important initiative.

IEI Celebrates Juneteenth

June 16, 2023

Juneteenth is celebrated every year on June 19th. It was created to highlight the freedom of Black Americans and the end of slavery of the United States. While only being nationally recognized recently, the holiday has been celebrated since 1866.

Slavery ended in January of 1863, but news did not reach Texas until June 19th, 1865. On the first anniversary of this day, was the first Juneteenth celebration. The people rejoiced with parties, prayers, and eventually, annual pilgrimages to Galveston, where that first celebration took place.

Juneteenth is a day of jubilation, but it is also a day of reflection. It is important to recognize the impacts that slavery has left on the United States. This holiday is a way to remember and grieve the hardships of slavery while also rejoicing in celebration of hope for the future.

As an African American owned civil engineering firm, we are committed to increasing diversity in the AEC industry. We strive to make lasting impressions through our contributions to the communities where we live and work.

IEI has proudly contributed to the design and construction of multiple award-winning trails and recreational facilities which reimagine infrastructure in both urban and rural settings across the country, such as the Illinois Prairie Path, the Indianapolis Pennsy Trail, and New York’s Starlight Park.
