Infrastructure Engineering Names Ken Smorynski as Chicago Office Operations Leader

March 10, 2021

Infrastructure Engineering Inc. (IEI) is pleased to announce the promotion of Ken Smorynski, PE, SE to Vice President and the Chicago Office Operations Leader. In his new role, Mr. Smorynski will oversee IEI’s design, program management and construction inspection staff. He will also be responsible for staff development, lead generation, client relations, contract management and overseeing day-to-day activities.

For nearly eight years, Mr. Smorynski managed the Chicago Design team and under his leadership, the Design Group more than doubled its revenue and took on more complex projects, which has been an essential part of the office’s growth.

In addition to his role as Design Group Manager, Mr. Smorynski was also the Project Manager of the CDOT Jackson Park Mobility Improvements project that includes delivery of Phase I and Phase II engineering services to support the South Lakefront Framework Plan.  This $145M project is designed to provide significant transportation improvements to increase safety, roadway mobility, and pedestrian accommodations in and around Jackson Park in preparation for the Obama Presidential Center. The project was very challenging in that it involved working on complex Phase I preliminary engineering and environmental assessment services concurrently with Phase II final design engineering services.  The Phase I environmental assessment entailed two lead federal agencies, the National Park Service and the Federal Highway Administration; and sought to balance providing mobility improvements while at the same time avoiding or minimizing impacts to the various environmental and historic resources in the project area.

Ken embodies the core values IEI was built on and he has the respect of his colleagues and clients alike. “This promotion recognizes the contributions Ken has made during his tenure with IEI and I look forward to experiencing greater Chicago Office growth as Ken settles into his new role,” said IEI President, Michael Sutton.

An accomplished structural engineer, Mr. Smorynski holds a Bachelor and Master of Science in Civil Engineering; and recently earned a Master of Business Administration from the University of Illinois Champaign-Urbana. His expertise, skill and leadership will enhance business operations and expand IEI’s project footprint throughout Chicagoland.
