The Chicago Department of Transportation's (CDOT) Bureau of Highways wanted to improve the vertical clearance on 35th Street as it passes under the CSX Railroad viaduct. The vertical clearance at this structure was 13 feet, 4 inches which did not meet the current requirements of 14 feet, 6 inches. The vertical clearance was accomplished by lowering the 35th Street pavements and relocating the existing 42- inch brick sewer, which had less than 3 feet of cover at the viaduct location.

IEI's responsibilities for the 35th Street vertical clearance improvement consisted of coordination with the railroad and utility companies, and preparation of the construction plans at 75 percent, 95 percent and 100 percent along with all cost estimates and specifications. IEI performed hydraulic calculations for the relocation of the sewer system and provided junction chambers for connection to the existing brick sewer.
